Former NFL QB Ryan Leaf Pleads Guilty to Drug Offense

Former San Diego Chargers quarterback Ryan Leaf has pleaded guilty to a drug offense and felony burglary as part of a plea deal, according to the Associated Press. Leaf was the Number 2 overall NFL draft pick in 1998. The charges to which he pled guilty stemmed from breaking into a friend's house, where he stole prescription drugs.

The plea agreement requires him to attend in-patient drug treatment for nine months.

Leaf was not a first-time offender and has been arrested twice this year on drug offense charges. An investigation was initiated in response to a tip that alleged the former QB was receiving "suspicious packages" at the post office. The packages were shipped from Florida.

On March 30, Leaf was arrested when a friend told police Leaf had entered his home without permission and had stolen oxycodone. He posted bail, and was later arrested again when he was identified as the man who had broken into a couple's home. When they found Leaf, he said he had the wrong house. Later, the couple discovered that some of their prescription medications were missing.

Drug arrests for possession of prescription medication have become increasingly common.
