Trial Continues in Polo Club Founder's DUI Manslaughter Case
In February, 2010, a 23-year-old man drowned to death after his car was allegedly rammed into a canal by the now infamous DUI offender John Goodman, founder of the Palm Beach International Polo Club. Goodman had been drinking, and his blood alcohol content was later found to be twice the legal limit. Allegedly, Goodman had zoomed through a stop sign in his Bentley, colliding with the other vehicle. The defense claims that Goodman's vehicle had mechanical malfunctions at the time.
Goodman's case received a great deal of media attention when he adopted his 42-year-old girlfriend, which may have been a move to protect his assets. Yesterday, the prosecution rested in Goodman's trial. Goodman faces charges of DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident.
DUI convictions can carry harsher punishments when injuries or death are involved. Both misdemeanors and felonies can stem from DUI. DUI manslaughter is a felony charge, often carrying serious potential punishments like prison time and heavy fines. It is estimated that Goodman could face up to 30 years in prison if he is convicted.
