Over 1000 Illegal Prescription Drug Arrests in Florida since March
According to an article in the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Florida law enforcement, including the Statewide Drug Enforcement Strike Force, have arrested at least 1000 suspected prescription drug dealers and seized hundreds of thousands of prescription pills since March. As a result, officials allege a large percentage drop in oxycodone purchases by pharmacies and doctors through the month of June.
A large number of those arrested for drug charges in Florida are due to the distribution and abuse of prescription drugs like oxycodone and Xanax. Governor Rick Scott says this has been made possible by targeting "bad doctors at the top of the pill mill supply chain."
The Drug Enforcement Administration has statistics showing an almost 20 percent drop in oxycodone purchases for the first five months of 2011 compared to the same amount of time in 2010.
In 2010, Florida's top five drug killers were:
- Oxycodone – 1516 deaths
- Benzodiazepines – 1304 deaths
- Methadone – 694 deaths
- Alcohol – 572 deaths
- Cocaine – 561 deaths
Hundreds of thousands of pills were voluntarily surrendered by physicians and then destroyed by law enforcement. In addition, the Florida Department of Health issued nearly 160 emergency suspension orders against doctors. Just about half of the suspensions involve illegal prescription, dispensing, or use of prescription drugs.
