State and federal law enforcement agencies allege they have dismantled the nation's largest illegal painkiller distribution network on Tuesday here in Florida.

Authorities say they charged over 30 doctors, owners of pain clinics, and their employees with prescribing more than 20 million pain pills. It is believed the operation raked in $40 million between 2008 and 2010.

The unsealed indictment charges the suspects with racketeering, money laundering, and wire and mail fraud conspiracy. Some of those involved in this group were also allegedly involved in the illegal distribution of anabolic steroids through the internet, kidnapping, extortion, and other violent crimes. Thirteen of those implicated are doctors as old as 76-years-old.

Feds
seized homes and cars worth $9 million and $4.7 million in cash. The indictment also seeks forfeiture of $40 million in cash and other assets.

According to the indictment, people traveled from across the country with false complaints of pain in order to get oxycodone and other pain killers. Authorities claim that demand for prescription drugs continues to rise in Florida and elsewhere. However, the Attorney General's Office alleges that Florida is number one in the country when it comes to illegal consumption and distribution of prescription drugs. Seven people die each day in Florida as a result of drug overdoses.
