George Michael Sentenced to Jail for DUI
Pop singer George Michael was sentenced to eight weeks in jail after pleading guilty to a charge of driving under the influence in London today. He was sent to jail immediately after pleading. Michael will also have to pay a fine of 1250 pounds ($1925) and is banned from driving for five years.
Michael would have ordinarily been sentenced to three months, but he was given credit for remorse and for pleading guilty. The leniency of the judge also mentioned Michael's previous two drug charges and said it Michael doesn't seem to have tried to do anything about his addiction to marijuana.
The DUI charge relates to a July 4 accident where Michael crashed into the front of a shop in north London, damaging the front of it. No one was injured, but Michael was allegedly clearly under the influence.
In 2007, Michael was found guilty of "unfit driving through tiredness and prescription medication." He received a two-year driving ban in that case. In 2008, Michael was arrested in a London park and given a warning for possession of a controlled substance.
