Dozens Arrested in New Jersey Bank Fraud Ring

Over 270 local and federal agents from the FBI, IRS, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and other agencies were involved in a raid today in two New Jersey counties and Manhattan targeting subjects who allegedly participated in a bank-fraud ring. Authorities allege that the suspects hijacked the identities of overseas workers and bilked millions from several financial institutions. As many as 43 people were arrested.

The alleged scheme stretched from coast to coast and into the South Pacific and used the Social Security numbers of Asian immigrants working in American territories, including Guam. The suspects used the numbers to apply for driver's licenses under fake names and then utilized them to obtain credit cards and bank loans.

The suspects used credit cards obtained to allegedly purchase high-end vehicles, clothing, and liquor. They also allegedly used the cards at their own businesses or shell companies to trick banks to transmit money to them directly. When the bills came, the banks had another person's name on the other side of the globe.

New Jersey authorities say this was a massive case and that the organization was very sophisticated. At least until they got caught.
