Former Florida GOP Chair Charged with Fraud and Grand Theft
Jim Greer, the former chair of the Florida GOP has been arrested and charged with six felony counts of fraud, theft, and money laundering. This is in connection to a company he allegedly created to take some of the state party's fundraising dollars for personal expenses. He was arrested by Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents Wednesday morning at his home in Oviedo. He was then booked in Seminole County jail.
According to authorities, Greer was arrested on charges of money laundering, organized scheme to defraud, and four counts of grand theft. He was forced to resign his position with the GOP in January for overspending. Since then, he has become the focus of a criminal investigation for money he earned as majority owner of Victory Strategies, LLC. Victory Strategies was a fundraising company that kept ten percent of all major donations raised for state Republicans.
In 2006, Greer was picked for the chairman position by then-Republican Governor Charlie Crist. During Greer's three-year tenure, he allegedly increased the use of American Express charge cards for national travel and other expenditures. Party leaders allegedly ousted Greer when this activity came to light.
However, after Greer resigned, details of a secret fundraising contract were brought out into the open. This contract specified Victory Strategies to take over major donor fundraising and was never greenlighted or explained to GOP finance officials.
Greer is obviously innocent until proven guilty in this matter, but there seem to be political heavyweights in the Florida GOP who want these charges to stick.
