A doctor from Orlando and another from Winter Park were part of a police crackdown on prescription drug dealing that saw the arrests of 172 people total. Both doctors were charged with trafficking in hydrocodone.

Officials say the arrests come after a five-month investigation that focused on dealers in Orange, Seminole, Lake and Osceola counties. In all, over 20,000 pills, including oxycodone and Xanax, and several guns were seized in the drug sweeps.

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the clinics the doctors worked out of allegedly gave painkillers to hundreds of people who did not need medication.

Authorities and health officials have become concerned at the high levels of alleged prescription drug abuse in Central Florida. It is believed that six Floridians die from a prescription drug overdose every single day in Florida. In the Orange-Osceola district, 172 people died in 2008.

Florida law enforcement states that this operation is just the beginning of many to come. One reason is that some of the dealers bought their drugs from pain clinics. Some of this was local people, but some was allegedly others traveling to South Florida.
