A veteran Port Orange firefighter has been charged with scheme to defraud, grand theft and burglary of a residence. He is suspected of lying his way into at least four homes to steal the residents' pain medication.

In one incident, the firefighter allegedly told the girlfriend of a man who had recently died that the fire department had special receptacles to dispose of narcotics. She then handed him two large garbage bags containing mostly pain medication.

The firefighter also allegedly went to another home twice claiming that he was looking for missing tools. The woman who lived there found that her husband's pain medication was missing after the second visit.

The fourth case alleges that the firefighter overheard some of his fellow firefighters discussing a patient that was most likely on pain medication. The firefighter then allegedly went to the patient's home and stole medication from there.

Five investigators went to the firefighter's home, armed with a search warrant, where they allegedly found over 12,000 pills belonging to other people. They also allegedly found garbage bags containing bloody syringes, used needles, gauze, a latex band used to tie arms for injections, and incident reports from the fire department.

The firefighter asked others to lie for him, and now investigators are wondering if he stole from other homes.

He was released on $50,000 bail.
